It doesn't seem possible that one of the loveliest campgrounds in the state is in Federal Way, that unprepossessing home to strip malls and planned developments. But drive beyond all that and head towards the water, and you'll find Dash Point State Park. The heavily wooded, 400-acre park makes you feel as though you've driven hours from Seattle, instead of just over a half hour. You can usually find room amid the more than 100 camping sites, including a spacious group site. Best of all is the park's long stretch of beach, the closest thing you'll get to a California-style beach in these parts. That part of Puget Sound forms a cove, and the water is warmer and shallower than elsewhere. And sand stretches as far as the eye can see. If you're so inclined, stop at a McDonald's on the way back.
