Description

If you spend much time watching period Asian movies, you will remember scenes of dark inns, a scrim of pale steam, a crew of women tending an ancient grill, prodding battered cook pots licked with yellow flame. The classic Koreatown tavern Dansungsa is nothing like a relic of the 19th century. In fact, its ambiance is supposed to recall a Seoul movie palace of the 1940s. But the crudely delicious kimchi seem as if it came from another time and place. The spicy cabbage soup, which comes along with your first soju or beer, is served in a bowl so battered that the only possible explanation is 15 rounds with a chimpanzee.

It's not just that the vast majority of the clientele are Korean that makes it feel so exotic. It's not just the central kitchen billowing steam straight into the air, the painted mural of Kim Jong-il that rests atop the storefront, the Korean papers plastered on the walls or... More »

Dear Mr. Gold: We only have one night in town, but we were hoping to do an izakaya crawl. Suggestions? Not in Torrance, please. If we've drunk as much as we hope to drink, it's a bit far to drive. —Lisa, San Francisco Dear Lisa: I know that th... More »
