Description

This Sunset Heights mainstay has long been a place to grab a brew and a show. The bar stocks a healthy supply of Texas beers in addition to the standard Bud family of bottles, and the kitchen doles out eats until the clock strikes 1 a.m. Dan Electro's doesn't serve liquor, but bring your own and for a small fee they'll set you up with some fixings. A smattering of old guitars and groovy fluorescent skating-rink stars decorate the walls, and Dan Electro's corner stage has played host to too many local and regional names to count (most often blues, folk, roots-rock and hard rock). The extensive back garden patio holds many a refuge for those looking to relax in the cool of the evening. That is if you can find the place, since it is off the beaten paths of the Heights.

  • 2000 | Best Open-Mike Night

Seasoned musicians drift into Dan Electro's on Thursdays and jam with whoever happens to be around. Frequently these impromptu groupings kick ass. On a recent night, veterans Andy Williams and Diunna Greenleaf took the stage with three others and unleashed a feverish set of blues. Williams made his guitar moan, while Greenleaf hammed it up diva-style, showcasing her rich, booming voice. Another group included two dudes named Jeremiah -- front man Jeremiah Johnson, fresh in from rural... More »

Frequently cited by music historians as one of the first metal bands, short-lived Josefus was a ferocious thing to come upon in 1969. Led by angry, pilled-up drummer Doug Tull, who allegedly committed suicide in jail in Austin in 1991, the band wa... More »

For someone who more or less picked Houston at random when he was looking to get out of L.A. two years ago, honky-tonk singer-songwriter Mike Stinson gets the Bayou City's appeal. It's right there on "Died and Gone to Houston," one of 11 new songs... More »

One of the best live music venues in Houston. Check the schedule, the genre is sometimes very diverse and it's best enjoyed listening to the type of music you really like; which is blues for me and not so much punk rock.
