Just up the street from Casa Linda, Alfonso's, named after proprietor Peter Columbo's father, has been pulling in the neighborhood crowd since 1991. The shiny black-and-white checkerboard floor, fresh flowers on the tables and color photos of Italian street scenes set the mood for a cozy, enjoyable dining experience. For starters, we sampled an ample platter of antipasti--peppers, pepperoni, cheese, tomatoes and garlicky olives--before moving on to hot garlic rolls and rich minestrone. The chicken Marsala entrée is sautéed in white wine and served under a heap of buttery mushrooms. Most entrées come with a generous side of pasta (your choice) and spicy-sweet tomato sauce. Wind up with the icy cappuccino pie--one slice divides nicely for two.
I loved the atmosphere, and the gorgeous ceiling tiles. The garlic pizza knots were delectable, but the food kinda went downhill from there. My boyfriend ordered linguini in olive oil, and a side of sausage. His linguini was decent, nice flavor, but almost too-tender. After asking about his side order of sausage, our server delivered a sad bowl of bratwurst, swimming in a Chef Boyardee-like sauce. Bratwurst? Seriously? With excellent suppliers like Jimmy's nearby, this was inexcusable, particularly when the bill revealed that they charged six bucks for 2 small bratwurst in ketchupy sauce. I ordered the scallops and pasta. HUGE disappointment. The scallops were pale, underdone and gummy. The cappelini pasta was a tangled, sticky, bland, overcooked mess topped with slivers of thinly sliced green and red bell pepper. Linguini would have been a better choice here. Some seasoning, garlic and olive oil would have worked wonders. I had a couple of bites of this and decided to take the rest home and try to salvage it. Searing off the scallops properly and adding seasoning helped resusitate my dinner. The pizza looked decent, and I'd wished I had't splurged on the scallops. Seafood is apparently not what they do here. Had I ordered simple linguini or pizza, I think it would have been better. Note to the owner: those were BEAUTIFUL scallops - if you're going to serve higher end dishes, please have them cooked properly... and Bratwurst is NOT Italian.
