66 acres of flower and display gardens, including acres of azaleas, a Woman's Garden, animal sculptures, a bamboo garden and the DeGolyer house.
National Geographic’s Boyd Matson is a throwback to ye olde days of the adventurer, when men wrestled lions in the Sahara, went deep into the Amazon and climbed mountains in Nepal, all while keeping death in their back pockets. The journalist and... More »
We do everything a little differently in Texas, but there are few areas where we veer even further from the norm than we do with our gardening habits and schedules. Calling it a challenge to attain plant success in the Lone Star State is a... More »
It’s time to pack up miniature baby Jesus and tuck away the shepherds. Well, almost. At the Dallas Arboretum there’s still time to get your nativity fix before tiny sheep and magi bearing gifts go out of season. Sunday, catch the Arboretum’s... More »
Hey Freaky Deaks, wanna see Chihuly sculptures all lit up like crazy? But your prefer to see it in 10-inch platforms, white polyester pants that cling to your butt and a shirt unbuttoned so far even the space station can see your navel? Well,... More »
Maybe someday you, too, will have a six-month celebration of your life’s work as you rock an eye patch like whoa, but while you work out your five-year plan to attain Chihuly-level lionization, be sure to check out the nationally renowned,... More »
We're not advocating you make a regular habit of showing up to weddings uninvited, but let's say you happen to be at White Rock Lake doing a little fishing (don't eat anything you catch, of course) and you happen to see some nuptials being exchanged amidst the beautiful flora in the Dallas Arboretum. Resist the urge to scream, "Don't do it!" when the minister asks that question. Instead, eavesdrop on the blissful couple's exchange of vows in the most serene of settings, follow the wedding... The trick here is that the Cool Thursdays evening concerts at the Arboretum aren't supposed to be free. It's 10 bucks a head plus seven more for parking for these pop concerts, April through July, none in August, then a fall series throughout September and October. But you can hear them all without paying a nickel and also enjoy a very eclectic scene simply by paddling or sailing your small craft to the foot of the Arboretum, just off E. Lawther Drive near the Garland Road entrance to White... More »
They're gonna tear our playhouses down come late December, which still gives you plenty of time to see what they planted in the ground for Dallas Blooms back in March--16 architectural treats reflecting the wonder and wisdom contained in kiddie-book classics. Swings and slides are nice and all, but you're young'un hasn't lived (or learned) till he or she hops into the pages of The Lorax, James and the Giant Peach, Thumbelina, Peter Pan or the other classics on (enormous) display at the... On the shore of White Rock Lake, the Dallas Arboretum is one of those city treasures that many residents still don't know about. Those who do often visit the arboretum only around Easter when the azaleas--with 2,400 varieties--are in glorious bloom, or in the fall for the magnificent mums. But on those days when the thermometer hits 95 degrees, take a picnic and head for the Palmer Fern Dell in the Jonsson Color Garden. The misters that keep the moisture-loving ferns and pond plants... It is a little slice of heaven in our urban hell, isn't it? The Dallas Arboretum with 66 acres of variously manicured green spaces and forest-y wilderness, plus 11 display gardens, which bloom and change with the seasons. The Arboretum is a "let the kids run wild" place, and stay-at-home moms use it liberally for those summer afternoons when the only alternative activity for a houseful of kids is homicide. For more things to do, adjacent White Rock Lake offers practically limitless venues,... More »
With more than 60 acres of incredibly landscaped park to choose from, the Dallas Arboretum can provide a great backdrop to a portrait for anything. The Arboretum has fountains and sculptures, and something is always blooming, so you can wander around until you find a good spot. Even in the heat of the summer, the Arboretum seems like a cool and calming place. Maybe they're growing poppies. More »
So you've had an argument with your significant other. For example: It's the anniversary of the first time she ever called you her "little sugar pants" or whatever, and she wanted to have a nice candlelight dinner to mark the occasion. You, on the other hand, came home drunker than an American Eagle pilot about three hours after she put the food in the fridge and cried herself to sleep. You're in a fix, my friend. So pack a picnic basket and head to the Arboretum's lushly landscaped setup... More »
The Dallas Arboretum may sound like an obvious and uninventive choice, but the 66 acres offer a variety of different ways to experience nature in a quick tour and without actually roughing it. There's a bamboo forest, mulched trails through trees and wild vines and flowers, a path lined with animal sculptures, the Camp Estate's aromatic herb garden, shaded gazebos with romantic views and a smorgasbord of roses and giant magnolia trees bearing platter-sized flowers that smell almost like... Ever have absolutely nothing to do, and your children are bored to no end, and you can't stomach the thought of standing in line to eat cardboard-tasting pizza and look at another flying plastic ball? Pack the family in the car, clean out the moldy picnic basket and pack it full of finger foods and an old blanket and head over to the beautiful gardens of the Dallas Arboretum. All you'll need to do is kick back, relax, and enjoy the sweet sounds of music played by a live outdoor band. The... More »
Very peaceful, right next to White Rock Lake. Also has a great music series in the spring.
Very peaceful, beautiful place to wander any day of the week, any time of the year. The Arboretum always has great events as well, from pop music and picnic nights, to art showings and kids' activities.
Beautiful place to get away in the city. There are several spots that look over the lake. Sometimes they have concerts during the summer where you can bring your own picnic.
