East Dallas has a healthy dose of drive-in burger joints. Dairy-Ette, open since 1956, is just one of the fine examples of a bygone era frozen in time -- and neon. Here, care is not only given to the burgers but is also given to the thin, snap-in-your-mouth fries and homemade root beer (as in on location), done the same way since the cooks began flipping patties at Dairy-Ette. The fries, though unseasoned, are so revered customers skip the standard drive-in tater tots. Greasy cheeseburgers, club sandwiches and ice cream floats can also be consumed inside the restaurant on a backed counter stool or in a vinyl booth. Drive up for the car-side service or step inside for some kiss-my-grits short orders.

Opened in 1956 and apparently mostly unchanged since then, Dairy-ette is reminiscent of a bygone era. Or so we suppose. We're not that old. The burgers are cheap yet tasty, as are the fries. But the best part might just be the root beer brewed on site. Served in a frosty mug, it's sweet but not too much so, and tastes fresh without having that funky licorice taste that some of the far more expensive boutique brands have. Normally we prefer a beer sans root with our hamburger, but here we're... More »
Crowning the best hamburger is nigh impossible in this beef-crazy town, but a master of burger basics muscled its way to the top of our list. Dairy-ette, the East Dallas drive-in burger joint, has earned serious street cred since opening in 1956. Car hops serve juicy, old-fashioned hamburgers, fresh-cut french fries and homemade root beer to people in cars parked under the red-and-white striped awning. Top a burger with cheese, chili, or live large with chili and cheese. Heck, go for the... More »
You can season french fries to death or smother them in pounds of ketchup and come away with a satisfying hunk of cooked taters, but there's something to be said for the perfect car fry. It always happens: You grab an order to go and can't wait to start in on those fries, their aroma filling your mid-sized sedan with delicious temptation. But ketchup isn't gonna happen during your drive, and too much seasoning results in a messy steering wheel. What's a fry purist on the go to do? Grab 'em... More »
