For more than two decades, Dada has played a pivotal role in the Dallas music scene. Until the club shut down for a while beginning in 2009, the pulse of Dallas music could always be heard coming from the drums on the stage at Dada, located squarely in the middle of Deep Ellum. Luckily, in early 2011, City Tavern owner Josh Florence and some partners purchased and renovated the Deep Ellum mainstay. Big changes include an improved sound system, a huge outdoor stage and a bar relocated to the back of the room. The bar's brick walls are still intact, as is the corner stage where local and national bands play almost every night.
Hemming together Dallas’ radical fringe is a Deep Ellum legacy. It takes balls for a community to create and perform on its own terms, just a DART stop away from the meticulously structured, high falutin’ Arts District. And still, it does. We’re... More »
The last time I saw Ty Segall I was lifting him into a crowd of people so he could surf along to the sounds of the Jesus and Mary Chain, he had a grin on his face and a air of "fuck it, let's have fun... More »
The Atomic Tanlines received plenty of praise last year with their blend of punk, free jazz and soul. The Denton-based five-piece sat down with us at the Waffle House where they started to discuss the... More »
Back in the '90s, Canada's Memoryhouse were one of those bands you would never expect to release an album on Sub Pop. But over the past decade, the Seattle-based label has diversified so much that ... More »
Moving from Tennessee to London proved fairly easy for Nathan Nicholson of The Boxer Rebellion. After losing his mother in 2000, he hightailed it across the pond and quickly formed a band. Speaking f... More »
Sitting out here on a warm (or sweltering hot) summer evening and watching a good band fill up Dada's spacious front room with music is pretty damn nice. It's also comforting to be able to chain-smoke nervously while you wait to go on and bomb at karaoke with a live band behind you. And when you stumble offstage after your voice breaks five times trying to hit the high notes on "Welcome to the Jungle," you can sit outside and nurse your wounds with a cold beer under the stars. Dada, for your... More »
It's one of the last remaining bastions of the old heydays of Deep Ellum, but since new ownership took the storied club over in late June, Club Dada has been wowing music fans by hosting an impressive schedule of well-known touring acts within the confines of its not-so-huge space. Changes are still in store for the club, and yes, there have been bumps along the way as the club's new owners have aimed to change the public perception of the venue, but for the most part, the renewed energy is... Deep Ellum's Club Dada has been around for 21 years, its venerable chipped brick walls and cozy stage welcoming the most storied of Dallas--and national--musicians. Everyone was all ape-shit about Trees back in the day, but Dada's the one that lasted, and Dada's the one that packs the joint with Hot Hot Heat one night, with Hendrick the next, then with Hard Night's Day and then with a community barbecue on the newly revamped, friendly back patio. It may just be the most eclectic... More »
At the end of 2005, Club Dada was down for the count, knocked out by bumbling ownership and deemed another tombstone in the dwindling reputation of Deep Ellum. So how come it's winning this award and hosting big-name gigs (such as June's New Bohemians reunion) not even 12 months later? Because the new ownership--including members of Beatles cover band Hard Night's Day--has figured out how to make the joint appeal to two completely different audiences, making this the best rock bar across the... Changes are still in store for the club, and yes, there have been bumps along the way as the club's new owners have aimed to change the public perception of the venue, but for the most part, the renewed energy is not only welcome, but infectious as crowds slowly trickle back down to the once-legendary neighborhood.
Nice smaller place. Looking forward to their re-opening.
