This is a tiny, quiet spot in the Heights, perfect for consuming worthwhile calories. Dacapo Pastry Cafe's desserts, cakes and cookies are homemade, and it is impossible to pick the best, although the banana split cake and the raspberry cream tres leches probably take the cake. Oh, and there's also sandwiches on homemade breads. The "healthy pollo supreme," lean chicken on peppered herb bread, is superb, as is the "vegetarian special." Salads - all with homemade dressings - soups and fabulous quiches round out the menu.
Carrots and cream cheese. No, that combo is not the cravings of a crazed woman in her ninth month of pregnancy; it's what brings carrot cake its magic. From the classic three-layer cake to miniature... More »

As far as sandwich fillings go, egg salad can often be tame, mild -- dare I say, effete? Not so at DaCapo's Pastry Cafe, whose version is genuinely peppy thanks to an infusion of honey mustard in the dressing and a sprinkling of dill. After experiencing this sweet-spicy punch, you'll never again see egg salad as the stuff of staid tea parties. And that's a good thing, because if you go for the sandwich, you'll be licking your fingers. Which is awkward in gloves. More »
A pastry cafe with the best BLT? Really? Yes, really. The folks at Dacapo's may specialize in sweets, but they certainly kick butt when it comes to savory sandwiches. Piled high on toasted whole wheat bread is the perfect slathering of mayo, lettuce, thick-cut sliced tomatoes and bacon so perfectly cooked -- crispy yet full of fat and salty flavor -- you'll want to rush into the kitchen to get a peek at just how they do it. Add a pickle and a cup of homemade potato salad, and it's... More »
If you have even the slightest sweet tooth, you will find this place irresistible, not only for the sheer quantity of desserts, but the way they remind you of homemade cooking -- you know, the kind that happened before the microwave. If you're yearning for an old-fashioned raspberry and blackberry pie, then the "wild berry blast pie" is for you. Think you've found the ultimate tres leches? Think again. The version served here is topped with a raspberry sauce that makes this unlike any... More »
