One of the last of the old-line soda fountains, this north-side landmark is just plain fun for basic hotdog/sandwich/chili-type quick meals, which are essentially just an excuse to indulge in an authentic ice-cream float or banana malted for dessert. Actually, who needs the excuse? Pop in for a treat at any time.
Some sad news to end this week: Andy Karandzieff, owner of Old North institution and St. Louis treasure Crown Candy Kitchen (1401 St. Louis Avenue; 314-621-9650), announced via Twitter this morning t... More »

Opinionated About Dining strikes again. In March, the restaurant website's annual survey, which draws from 70,000 reviews by 3,000 users, ranked Niche (1831 Sidney Street; 314-773-7755) one of the na... More »

The milkshake has seen a renaissance of sorts over the past several years, making this particular honor much trickier to bestow than ever before. Fountain on Locust turns out a trayload of magnificent frozen concoctions. Pi Pizzeria, our 2011 winner in this category, pulls out all the stops, creating gloriously gluttonous, vaguely absurdist treats that leave one calculating calories for days afterward. The shakes at Fitz's take a back seat to the root beer float (duh), but they are more than... More »
It was a tough job, but someone had to do it. Someone had to put his neck on the line to judge this year's Milkshake Battle Royal, known on the streets as the Fount vs. the Crown Throwdown. After rigorous taste testing at both renowned shake crafters, the venerable Crown Candy Kitchen rose to the top over newer kids on the block like the Fountain on Locust. Did we say venerable? This tourist destination has been shaking it up since 1913. Renovations to the immediate neighborhood have only... More »
Some comfort foods are challenging, aggressive. Buffalo wings are valued by their oral incendiary abilities. Nachos and T-ravs have sharpened their edges. The slinger wants you dead. Other comfort foods are passive and more, well, comforting -- such as the milkshake. It takes a hell of a shake, then, to beat a man down, cow him, steal his dignity. But that's precisely what Crown Candy Kitchen's legendary milkshakes do: widen the eyes of the victim in disbelief when the glass hits the... More »
Crown Candy Kitchen has been a treasure trove for sweet-toothed St. Louisans (and a nightmare for the city's more self-righteous dentists) for nearly a century now, but the north-side landmark wears its age well. Squeeze into one of the small booths and read how Harry Karandzieff and Pete Jugaloff founded Crown Candy Kitchen in 1913. It's still a family affair, with the third generation of Karandzieffs serving up scoops of rich (14 percent butterfat!) ice cream as malts, sundaes, newports (a... More »
"Milkshake" (with apologies to Kelis, Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams) My milkshake brings all the boys to the north side! And they're like, It's better than Steak n Shake! Damn right, it's better than Ted Drewes! I can teach you, but I have to charge less than four bucks! I know you want it, The high butterfat content ice cream that makes me What the guys go crazy for. They lose their minds, The way I come in 24-ounce servings! I think it's time La la... More »
A milkshake at Crown Candy Kitchen is so mighty, it determines the course of the rest of your day: which movie you go see later (better make it the frenetic, fast-paced action pic), what you have for dinner (water is a wise choice) and whether you take an afternoon nap (duh). Built on a foundation of Crown's house-made ice cream -- which boasts a fourteen percent butterfat content, about four points above average -- the milkshakes are served the old-fashioned way, in curvy soda-fountain... Just about everyone in St. Louis knows that the best place for an authentic soda-fountain experience is Crown Candy Kitchen. Plus you can walk away with some sweets for your sweetie from the adjoining candy counter, whose visible delights include chocolates, licorice, rock candy and any number of other traditional favorites. However, if you've really been a putz or a boob lately, be sure to ask for what's not openly exhibited -- namely, something from Crown's fine selection of anatomically... More »
This North St. Louis institution, which boasts that it is the oldest soda fountain in the city, packs a crowd at lunchtime for its milkshakes and malts and standard luncheon menu of roast beef, BLTs, chili dogs and other sandwich fare. Crown Candy Kitchen was opened in 1913 by two Greeks who brought their confectionery skills to America, and the kitchen still creates its own chocolates today -- including dozens of figurines around the holidays. Here, you can partake in some sinful Heavenly... More »
Yummy!
OMG! I love this place. Best chocolate candies in town. Best Ice cream place in town. Their BLT is to die for. I love going here on a warm Saturday or Sunday afternoon.
