Cream Pan in Tustin has Japanese pastries like anpan and the eponymous cream pan. The place is also known for their shockingly good strawberry custard croissants that are bought by hungry Tustinites by the dozen. What many people may not know, though, is that Cream Pan has absolutely, unequivocally, the best baguette and épi in Orange County. It isn't just the flaky croissants stuffed with pastry cream and studded with juicy sliced strawberries (even at unusual times of the year) that people line up for at Cream Pan - the buns are certain to run out if you don't get a move on early in the morning; but there's also a whole case of tempting calorie bombs you'll walk past to get to the counter, and absolutely everything inside is made with the fanatical attention to detail only the Japanese could accomplish. Besides the Danishes that explode into feather-light shards in your mouth, the chefs also make spectacular cheese rolls. Cream Pan's goodies are reminiscent of crowded boulangeries in Paris and scream for just a little sweet butter and maybe a touch of jam before being dunked into coffee, Japanese-French style. It's this perfection that made Cream Pan the OC Weekly's Best Bakery in 2008 and 2012. Just look carefully when finding this bakery - they often change their outer facade.
1. There'd better be some strawberry croissants left by the time I get to the front. 2. They need more than two cash registers.3. Supermarkets may have rendered neighborhood butchers obsolete; but ne... More »
I am a sucker for Cream Pan's sandwiches, especially the korokke pan. House-made hoagie bread, a deep fried potato korokke that's as close as Japanese food is going to get to the falafel, glops of Tho... More »

We've rhapsodized about Cream Pan--once just an unassuming little Japanese bakery in Old Town Tustin--in excess here on these blogs. It has made so many of our "Best Of" lists, lists of Ten Great Bake... More »
For the most part, a donut is a donut is a donut. Exceptions do exist--the fruit-stuffed catcher's mitt that is the strawberry donut at Glendora's Donut Man or the crazy creations at Portland's Voodoo... More »

Cream Pan, Tustin's beloved little Japanese bakery, recently expanded into bigger digs with a shiny espresso machine and a new name. The baked goods, however, smell just as sweet. Crusty loaves with long, determined gashes. Sugary dough domes filled with azuki and cream. All are spectacular. But we've got two words for you: strawberry croissant ($2.20). It's a pastry perfect in conception, construction and execution. Nothing in its triangular, hand-holdable frame can be improved upon. The croissant flakes off in crisp, buttery sheets; the custard is as cool as silk; and the sliced strawberries are perkier than a giggly, doe-eyed anime schoolgirl. And of course, it's sprinkled with plenty of powdered sugar to make it look like you've just snorted some blow. Japonaise's strawberry croissants are just as addicting.
