The Crandall Cotton Gin is a bastion of home-cookin’ housed in -- surprise! -- an old cotton gin. (That’s gin as in an automated cotton-picking machine, not the liquor, so don’t get too excited.) Chicken-fried steak and chicken-fried chicken are what you’ll find on practically every table here, flanked by the requisite sides -- fried okra, cooked cabbage, broccoli casserole, fluffy yeast rolls and other stuff that your grandmother probably used to make. Lest you think the Cotton Gin is stuck in a time warp, they do have newfangled things like sweet potato fries. Weekday mornings bring dirt-cheap breakfast specials like omelets, French toast, and eggs and hash browns. The sign says “Crandall Cotton Gin Restaurant & Club,” and while you won’t find a disco ball or a DJ here, there is indeed a full bar.
Unless you really, really love Dairy Queen, the Crandall Cotton Gin is one of the last outposts for a hearty meal between Dallas and Tyler. Next time you're truckin' out to the Piney Woods, stop here for an $8.95 daily dinner special, which gets you more food than any person should eat in a single sitting.
