A casual BYOB place with fragrant, deftly crafted, Mediterranean-themed fare in a homey setting. (It used to be an antiques store.) The menu changes with the seasons. Try to go on a week when there's lamb shank with dried fruit, roasted wild salmon with a tomato basil salsa or free-range chicken with a roasted garlic and whole-grain mustard cream sauce. Outstanding dessert pastries, especially the signature banana brûlée tart.

Father's Day, celebrated this year on Sunday, June 17, pays tribute to our dads, who, in one sweaty and heated moment, engaged in coitus with our moms and made us the people we are today. Yay, Dad. ... More »
Sure, it may be called Arizona Spring Restaurant Week, but this nine-day sup-fest -- from Saturday, May 19, through Sunday, May 27 -- takes place when the Valley starts heating up and the restaurant b... More »
Tired of discovering a restaurant's delectable desserts after stuffing ourselves full of appetizers and entrees, we're on a mission to find the places where diners should order dessert first. After al... More »
Let me apologize to the cult of Coup Des Tartes: Your little gem is just way too wonderful to keep a secret. This intimate French bistro has been around for nearly a decade, and yet it still seems off the radar. Of course, local foodies are... More »
It's nerve-wracking enough, trying to figure out what to talk about on a first date — who needs to worry about where to go, too? Pick a chill destination like Coup des Tartes, where the candlelit vibe is cozy, the food is classy, and there's enough subtle romance about the place to help along whatever spontaneous chemistry you might have with your date. As an ice-breaker, start with an interactive appetizer — perhaps the plate of "interesting cheeses," or the gooey Brie brûlée, served with toasts and fresh fruit. Entrees are sure to impress; the house specialty, Moroccan-spiced lamb shank, is particularly mouthwatering, as is the filet mignon. No surprise, the dessert list is a roundup of half a dozen different tarts, from banana brûlée in a chocolate crust to apple pecan walnut tart. And we almost forgot to mention that Coup des Tartes is BYOB — a definite plus whether you're on a date or not.

Oh, so you're finally gonna dust off that nice bottle of wine you've been hoarding for so long? It's about time. And, boy, do we know just the place for you to drink it: Coup des Tartes, a wonderful but almost too well-hidden bistro located just south of Highland, in a quaint, historic house. With wood floors, coved ceilings, and candles everywhere, the atmosphere is special-occasion cozy, completely worthy of that fine vintage you're ready to sip. The menu's outstanding, too, with dishes... More »
We know these tarts are special, since they're spelled in the très European "tartes." Each little jewel is handcrafted by the bistro's "Tarte Goddesses," and they're to die for (or at least diet for). We're thrilled with the expertly balanced flavors and the restraint in cloying, tooth-shattering sugar. The signature tarte is a symphony of chocolate crust brimming with bananas and coconut cream that's brûléed to order. We're also addicted to the white chocolate nectarine... More »
Some chefs treat the fusion concept as license to pair unnatural foods. Sushi schnitzel? Not for us, thanks. Then there are chefs like Natascha Ovando-Karadsheh, who takes classic dishes and marries them with select surprises, for tastes that are inspired but not weird. The handwritten menu changes nightly, depending on available ingredients and the chef's mood.At Coup Des Tartes, we're impressed with such dishes as pork tenderloin, taken a little Jamaican with jerk rub, a little...
