Description

Despite being almost completely surrounded by frumpy strip malls, the Country Deli in Chatsworth still has a homey atmosphere, for which you can thank the Lovi family, who’ve owned this Jewish deli since the early ‘70s, and who run two other delis in neighboring areas. The five pages of the menu dedicated to breakfast alone would make an early riser out of anyone, especially dishes like the aptly named The Real McCoy (three eggs with sausages, bacon, ham steak, potatoes, toast and coffee). Besides all the smoked fish specialties and the matzo brei fried with eggs, you’ll find loads of other tried-and-true Jewish deli staples, including borscht, stuffed cabbages, knishes and kreplach, not to mention pastrami, brisket and corned beef sandwiches, many served three-decker style. Kudos if you can make it out the door without turning back; the brick-heavy brownies, napoleons, eclairs and other desserts in the display case near the counter look heavenly, but are hell on the hips.

Country Deli, tucked up in northwest Chatsworth, with its Western motif and murals of old cowboy stars, and its outdoor dining porch that overlooks a lane of 90-year-old olive trees, is the wonderful secret the Echo Park types don't know about. It's got the brassy waitresses and front-desk gal, the piled-up... More »
