Where the cheap meet to eat elite treats. Well, maybe we're not cheap, exactly, but we're thrifty. We know that we can walk into Cossetta with a date on our arm and a pair of sawbucks in our pockets, get slices of pizza enlivened by spicy sauce, salads full of oil-cured olives and zingy Roquefort, submarine sandwiches or veal parmigiana, glasses of wine, and rich, creamy cannoli. They have the best pizza in St. Paul, but never go to the deli before the restuarant opens, or all the cooks talk about you in another language.
For anyone whose cubicles and dashboards often double as dining tables, a carryout meal from this longstanding St. Paul lunch hub offers loads more home-style comfort than its stir-fried or tortilla-wrapped counterparts. Granted, the average Atkins disciple would likely run screaming at the sight of Cossetta's carbo-licious mostaccioli or scrumptious pasta salads, but even those folks can find an array of straight-up sausages and deli cheeses to fall back on. And if true on-the-go eating... More »
Is it the latitude? The longitude? When did Minnesotans collectively decide that "Italian" is synonymous with "perfect"? Anytime pink winter tomatoes show up next to some slightly fresh mozzarella there's dancing in the streets. We toyed with suggesting that you just head for the farmers' market--figuring that you can eat a lot better for a lot cheaper at home than you can at many low-budget Italian eateries--but then we remembered Cossetta's, where you're fed for a song, where there's...
