Description

Most of food-oriented Minneapolis was reeling when three of our biggest of our big-name restaurants closed, namely Auriga, Five, and Restaurant Levain. What to do? Where to go? Who would carry the locally sourced, local-talent train forward? Luckily, the answer was right in plain sight, at the Corner Table, a restaurant in Kingfield helmed by Scott Pampuch, the chef locally famous for launching the Modern Cafe into its modern era. The Corner Table has local-sourcing cred to burn: For instance, all their beef is grass-fed and raised locally by Thousand Hills Cattle Company, and the rest of their meat comes through the Southeast Minnesota Food Network, which draws on farms from around Pampuch's hometown, Winona. The hungry hordes come often to sample from the frequently changing seasonal menu, which has featured such dishes as a Minnesota beef tenderloin grilled and served beside crimini mushrooms, roasted shallots, and chestnut spaetzle; or a green curry lamb stew with polenta, parsnips, and pumpkin; they stay for the light and clean little restaurant's sophisticated wine list, and desserts.

  • 2010 | BEST RESTAURANT WHEN SOMEONE ELSE IS PAYING

The phrase "all you can eat" is often associated with buffets where those with the most voracious appetites go to refuel: Quantity tends to trump the quality of whatever's being shoveled into the tank. A seat at the Corner Table's kitchen table challenges those notions by offering the farm-fresh gourmand's version of the concept. For $125 a person, diners get to watch chef-owner Scott Pampuch and his crew in dinner-service action and receive their own parade of courses--delicious tastes... More »

  • 2009 | Best Neighborhood Cafe (Minneapolis)

You wouldn't expect a restaurant this tiny to draw the attention of New York City's James Beard Foundation, but Corner Table has proved both to its neighbors and big-city foodiephiles that good cuisine can come in small packages. Owner Scott Pampuch and his cohort Lisa Hanson are among the best-versed chefs in town when it comes to working with local meats, so ordering, say, the grass-fed steak, braised oxtail, or coq au vin pretty much guarantees deliciousness. And when produce season... More »

  • 2007 | BEST NEIGHBORHOOD CAFE--MINNEAPOLIS

Corner Table has long been the best-kept-secret of the bucolic Kingfield neighborhood: The room is light and airily modern-museum-like, the food is both delicious and pristinely locally sourced, and the prices are more affordable than lots of comparable spots, especially on Sunday "vino + vinyl" nights when diners bring in their favorite vinyl records to spin. Unfortunately for Kingfielders, but fortunately for the rest of us, the secret is out: The place has been packed all winter with... More »

  • 2006 | BEST NEIGHBORHOOD CAFÉ--MINNEAPOLIS

Neighborhoods are filled with nothing so much as lots ofs neighbors, and in Kingfield, those neighbors can pretty much be divided into two camps: those who have significant caches of rare vinyl LPs, and those who remember how things used to be, back in the day. All of these neighbors find happiness, respite, and succor in chef and owner Scott Pampuch's friendly little restaurant Corner Table, which has, for nearly two years, been working to be a little more than a restaurant--it's a...
