Description

Here's a hidden find in a beautiful setting that more should know of -- the Cornell CafŽ is inside the Japanese Morikami Museum. The cafŽ is on a level overlooking the water gardens, rocks and plants artfully displayed along the paths. Food is Asian, with a variety of influences, but mainly Japanese, and all is value-priced. Choose from appetizers or combine for small plates of pork gyoza, crab cakes, bang-bang shrimp, sweet potato tempura, or chilled tofu. A full array of beautifully displayed sushi rolls -- grouper, cucumber, salmon, shrimp, spicy tuna, and dragon are a few -- are available by the piece or in combo plates. A bento box or a number of entrŽes, including ginger-roasted duck, almond grouper, mahi with mango chutney, salmon teriyaki, and curry chicken, are on the menu. Japanese beer, plum wine, and sake are served, and there's a selection of desserts, including ice creams, to finish the meal. Note that admission to the gardens is required to get into the cafŽ; take advantage of this and stroll the serene gardens after your meal.

After running Chinese restaurants in southern Palm Beach County, owners Christy and Fu Chen settled on a menu of a pan-Asian mix of traditional (sushi, salmon teriyaki) and nontraditional dishes (almond-crusted grouper... • 2005 | Best Museum Café

The state of dining in many museums is disappointing. You're part of a captive audience. What a pleasure, then, to know that after you've strolled the goldfish ponds and other loveliness of the Morikami's gardens, some fine and affordable Japanese food is waiting at Cornell, which overlooks all the flora and babbling brooks. Start with the seaweed salad, a plentiful plate mixed with sesame seeds and mild hot peppers in a vinaigrette sauce for $4.50. Tuna, shrimp, grouper, and salmon rolls... More »
