It's hard to describe Copper Gate without sounding like a surrealist letch. So here goes: Viking-ship bar with naked-lady "sail" and Swedish menu. Once you've finished looking at all the velvet paintings of nudies and inspected the men's bathroom, you can return to the bar for glasses of aquavit-the housemade version with fennel, saffron, and horseradish is quite good-and Swedish eats. The kitchen's a little inconsistent, but generally reliable when it comes to pickled fish, dill-dusted fries, gravlax and Swedish meatballs. European ciders and beers are also available.

  • No Ordinary Fry

By Jonathan Kauffman | Wed, October 29, 2008

The French may be quick to deride our love of hamburgers and Coca-Cola, but they'll eagerly take credit for the third member of America's great fast-food trifecta. The French fry "is the culinary sign of francité (French ethnicity)," the philosoph... More >

  • Sweden’s Greatest Gift to Humankind

By Maggie Dutton | Wed, July 16, 2008

In this country, vodka gives white a bad name. It's an odorless, insipid mixer that only serves as a means to an end or a dull cohort for cranberry juice. There is so much more to the clear-spirits rainbow than this underachiever. Spiced, luscious... More >

  • Copper Gate Says No to Crack

    By | Wed, March 07, 2007

Copper Gate used to be a dive bar. The "scary kind," explains our waitress. "People would walk in and say, 'I'm not here to buy crack,'" she says. But ever since new owners took over a year ago, things have swung hard in the opposite direction: Wh... More >
