Before there was Midtown Global Market, there was Mercado Central. This continues to be a great place to grab a pile of incredible, authentic tacos, tamales, or one of those crave-inducing Manny's tortas. In the summer there are elotes outside--roasted corn on the cob, smeared with mayo, crumbly cheese, and with a little acid hit of lime. Mercado Central is the spot for some of the best cheap eats in town.
O, woe is the food court, that bizarre union of cheap commerce and gluttony, hurry and rest, which really gained footing around these parts, mostly in shopping malls, in the 1980s. It's not so much that the food court was a bad idea at the time, it's just that as time marched on, the food court became so corporate, so staid, so uniquely American.
