Everything about this East Village pub is supposed to be comforting, from the menu to the décor to the board games tucked into the bookshelves filled with leather-bound classics. Dangling chandeliers, a vintage cash register and antique mirrors give the place a seriously old-school feel, although the flat-screen TVs, often tuned to sports, and the jukebox add a touch of modernity. The menu was developed by Chef Carolynn Spence, who earned her stripes at restaurants like Danny Meyer¹s Blue Smoke and The Spotted Pig. Panini filled with ingredients as varied as pastrami and artichoke hearts are available alongside salads and hearty bar fare like French bread pizza and smoked-chicken quesadillas. Sip a specialty cocktail like the Blackberry Old Fashioned (Maker's Mark, blackberry preserves and orange zest) or one of the imported and domestic draught brews. The bar really gets going on Mondays at 8pm during karaoke night and Wednesdays at 9pm during trivia night.— Keith Wagstaff
