Description

The ironically named Colossal Cafe--the place can't have more than a dozen chairs--offers several light, fresh, and novel approaches to what can otherwise be the heaviest meal of the day. The rich and substantial apple, walnut, and brie flappers are things of wonder-fluffy and elegant without being dull, mealy, or bread-like, as are so many of their competitors. Omelets at Colossal are feather-light and packed full of fresh ingredients. Even though Colossal is exclusively a breakfast-lunch joint, but the best thing to order, in fact, may be the takeout dinners, particularly the delicious--and colossal--chicken pot pie. (FYI, the place only takes cash or a local check.) For those willing to dine in cramped quarters, the rewards of Colossal Cafe are plentiful, but maybe even more so with food taken to go.

COLOSSAL CAFE 1839 E. 42nd St., Minneapolis 612.729.2377 To the best of my knowledge, restaurant critics have no formalized and universally applied code of ethics. If one were to be written, however, it should probably include a clause about not ... More »
