Description

Founded in 1939, and obscurely located, Colandrea New Corner is a Dyker Heights institution, a red-sauced place espousing the ideals of Italian-American cuisine. That means you should probably eschew the higher-end entrees of veal and chicken (often layered with cheese and prosciutto) in favor of the pastas (baked pastas, especially) and appetizers. An exception to this rule is chicken cacciatore (bone-in version, of course), but otherwise you should regale yourself with the wonderful lasagna (with an extra pile of meat on top), or baked ziti in the Sicilian or Sorrentine style. Anything with clams (raw or cooked) makes a wonderful app, as does the mozzarella in carrozza ("in a carriage")- the best toasted cheese sandwich you've ever had.

Bombarded with regional cuisines straight from Italy, we tend to forget our own Italian-American cooking. Originating late in the 19th century, as immigrants began arriving from Naples, Calabria, Apulia, and Sicily, its signature dishes—pizza,... More »
