For those looking to dance to a different beat, the small-but-always-packed Club Viva! offers world music five nights a week. Hidden in plain sight in an alley just off bustling Euclid Avenue, this club still manages to feel miles away from the sports bars and boutique shops of the Central West End. Hour-long dance lessons are free prior to Latin nights, and the diverse crowd is always friendly and willing to give pointers. Freewheeling bartenders serve up tasty nightly specials, and though most of the music pumping through Club Viva! is via DJ, the club also occasionally attracts international reggae acts.
This week brings us not one but TWO members of the Wu-Tang Clan (unfortunately on separate nights), Japanese punk-weirdos Peelander-Z, and the first visit ever from Seattle's raw Ramones-y punk band t... More »
Viva may lack the glitz of joints like Lush and Pepper Lounge, but the dance moves its patrons flaunt on a nightly basis more than make up for any perceived deficiency in the swank department. The tiny basement club has been a fixture of the Central West End for more than a decade. While the music runs the gamut from reggae to Top 40 R&B, the highlights are the Latin nights on Thursday and Saturday, featuring reggaeton, salsa, merengue, bachata and enough corresponding hip-shaking to make Shakira proud. Can't cut a rug south-of-the-border-style? Free salsa dancing lessons are offered weekly!

While dancing takes place at many venues downtown, most of these hotspots aren't necessarily in the business of teaching folks how to shake it in style. Sure, dancing should be something that you just do, that you just feel, but some people like to know exactly what they should be... More »
