Climax Lounge celebrated its fortieth birthday in 2011, proving that time flies when you’re having fun. The joint has a colorful past: In the ‘90s, as the Raven, it hosted punk-rock acts; the Fray and M. Ward have played there. Today it’s one of Denver’s finest black-box live-music venues, showcasing bands that span the spectrum from rock to jazz to punk, and there’s a killer vintage video arcade in the back where video-game freaks can blister their thumbs to their hearts' content with the selection of early- to mid-1980s games like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Centipede, Galaga, Qiz, Tempest, Gorf and Tron for a quarter a play. The Climax also is home to one of the city’s only competitive pinball competitions. Between the music, the video games and the booze, we’re frankly not sure why you’d ever want to leave.

Sure, the front of the Climax Lounge is one of Denver's finest black-box live-music venues, but the vintage video arcade in the back lounge is where we like to spend our spare change. The selection of early- to mid-1980s games is truly a hall of fame: Donkey Kong, Pac Man, Centipede, Galaga, Qix, Tempest, Gorf and Tron (light cycles rock, dude!), all for just a quarter a play. If only they had Dig-Dug, we'd be in retro-vidiot heaven. More »
Most evenings at the Climax Lounge, the game area in a back room is open to everyone. But every Thursday night, novices are advised to step aside and let the experts do their thing. Boasting one of Denver's only competitive p-ball competitions, the Lounge has become a sporting destination for indie rockers, punks and pinball wizards who like to ping and pong metallic balls around -- and who take said activity very seriously. Cheap beer, good music and free admission are among the attributes... More »
