For more than a century, locals and tourists alike have been heading out to the edge of the continent for that dazzling panorama of coastline, sunsets, and limitless Pacific … and the food and drink that goes with it. The Cliff House is a San Francisco classic, especially striking after a 2002-'04 renovation project that gave it a sweeping, light-filled Art Deco ocean-liner ambience. The space hosts two dining venues, the casual first-come first-served Bistro (chowder, burgers, crab Louis, cioppino), and the more elegant reservations-only Sutro's (bouillabaisse, tuna tartare, filet mignon, and the like). Both offer timeless floor-to-ceiling vistas of Seal Rocks, the Golden Gate, the occasional migrating whale, and ships disappearing into the horizon.
