Description

A decent burger in a great room -- that ought to be Citygrille's new slogan. While Citygrille's burgers might not be the best, they are certainly good: a half-pound of ground sirloin on a good bun. The kitchen also does a mean Colorado-style green chile that's a marvel when paired with fries. The dining room runs specials every night of the week, and the comfortable bar is a regular hangout for Cap Hill VIPs and neighbors, lawmakers and loons.

CityGrille may not serve the best burger, but its fries are something else

"Best Burger in Denver." That's what it says on the signs, banners, website and advertising for CityGrille. Best burger in Denver, as voted on by just about anyone with an opinion on such things. I've been one of the lone holdouts, refusing to... More »

    City Grille

There are many unanswered questions in this world. For example, why don't heavier things fall faster? Why is there any debate about Ward Churchill's job status? Why didn't Sanjaya get voted off quicker? Why do I know the name Sanjaya? How do I... More »

The wait at the Cherry Cricket was twenty minutes, shading into thirty, late that Saturday afternoon. "That's a long time to wait for a burger," Laura said. "How's it look in there?" "Busy," I told her. "It's always busy." And we sat down on... More »

    The Bite

Although in its infancy, the Manhattan Grill has already gained a reputation as a major power-lunch and -dinner spot (see review, this issue). Still, it has a long way to go before it tops another Rich Salturelli venture, CityGrille, as one of... More »

  • 2006 | BEST COLORADO-STYLE
    GREEN CHILE

Green chile has cult status in this state, and there's no better place to worship the peculiar concoction that is Colorado-style green chile than at CityGrille. Colorado verde is thicker and gooier than New Mexico green, and the fat chunks of pork give it more muscle and depth. While this hometown version might be considered blasphemy in Hatch country, at least CityGrille's kitchen is blaspheming with gusto, turning out a green chile that's roundly flavored, hot, sweet, almost creamy and... • 2003 | Best Power Lunch -- Liquid

A three-hour liquid lunch? Why not? Anyone who's anyone has done some time on this pine, so just belly up to the bar and start working on it. CityGrille is the place to go when you want to see exactly how your local legislator or councilman behaves when there's not a TV camera being poked in his face. It's the place where smart lobbyists go to stake out their prey and where smart reporters hang out to try and catch a little of the hush-hush action going on in the booths along the walls.... More »

  • 2002 | Best Hamburger

CityGrille, a newly remodeled Capitol Hill hot spot, just keeps getting hotter -- and its burger just keeps getting better. To make its take on the American classic, the kitchen grills up 80 percent lean ground sirloin, then slaps it on a yielding, juice-soaking Bluepoint Bakery bun. The burgers are fine plain, but they're also good gussied up; one particularly successful combo sports an inch-thick blanket of melted Swiss, crisp bacon and a great Caesar dressing. Although the bar's a great... More »

  • 2002 | Best French Fries

Handy, isn't it, for a restaurant that makes the town's best burger to also make its best French fries? Ronald McDonald, eat your heart out: These strips are the real deal, skinny and salty, with flavor that comes from a quick dip in hot oil rather than a trip to a flavor factory. The fries are delivered to your table so hot that grabbing one (and you will) could singe your fingers, but these crispy critters hold up even after a cooling-off period. This spud's for you, babe. • 2001 | Best Power Lunch

It's noon. Do you know where your legislator is? Chances are she's wolfing down one of Denver's best burgers at CityGrille, the gathering place/watering hole for anyone who's anyone at the State Capitol -- not to mention anyone who lobbies anyone there or across the street at city hall. But CityGrille isn't just for the power elite; if these walls could talk, they'd have the scoop on everyone from contributors and aides to secretaries and janitors, all of whom take advantage both of this... • 2000 | Best gringo green chile

If there's one thing that Colorado lobbyists, legislators and lawyers alike can agree on, it's the mean green at CityGrille. Last year former Bay Wolf owner Richard Salturelli and his partner/chef, onetime Beacon Grill chef David Minty, took over the old home of J. Beatty's, turning it into not just a watering hole for the town's movers and shakers, but also a respectable restaurant. CityGrille does grill up one of the town's best burgers; it also combines jalapeņos, tomatoes and pork in a way f... More »
