Description

This is an easy-going restaurant and bar that loves a good rock show. While the menu, beginning with lunch, doesn’t stray too far from the normal pub-grub choices (e.g., fish and chips, burgers, gigantic stuffed jalapeños), a po-boy and a pulled pork sandwich are also available. Customers can enjoy $3 drink specials or beer-and-a-shot pairings. Don’t be surprised if owner Josh Florence is the bartender serving it to you. Arriving before 10 p.m. is your best chance of snagging a table to take in the tunes from a long roster of bands on a Friday night. Thanks in part to the amiable staff, its well-worn wood decor and a kickin’ soundtrack, this joint oozes a neighborly vibe.

  • 2010 | Best Two-Fisted Drinking

Look, we know how silly we look holding a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon. It's cheap, flavorless, crappy American lager that has inexplicably become the drink of choice for hipsters trying to affect some kind of facetious blue-collar aesthetic. But when we're at City Tavern, we're drinking it all night. Because for $4, you can get a shot of Jack Daniel's whiskey with a PBR chaser any time, any day of the week. Whether you're there for the simple but tasty fried bar grub or the excellent Home... More »

  • 2010 | Best Downtown Hang-Out

As Downtown Dallas creeps closer and closer to regaining its status as a top entertainment destination among the city's many, many options, the neighborhood is facing some roadblocks. There are just too many carbon-copy ultra lounge establishments that have popped up on Main Street in recent years; we have a hard time keeping track of them all. Thank God, then, for City Tavern, a downtown bar and restaurant that is the polar opposite of the lush venues that surround it. There are no frills... More »

  • 2009 | Best Spot to Meet the Fledgling Community in Downtown

City Tavern is the Cheers of downtown. Everybody knows your name. That's because most patrons are downtown residents, especially on any given weekday. As the downtown population has grown from 200 to 6,000 residents in the last 15 years, the Tavern has been transformed by demand into the downtown community center. In May, a group of downtown residents threw their favorite barfly, a decades-long resident of the Manor building, a fund-raiser to help pay for her life-saving surgery. The next... More »

  • 2004 | Best Billiards

If you're like us--and we hope you're not, because a trip to rehab is in your immediate future--the perfect game of pool happens between two events: the fifth bourbon-and-whatever of the night and the first broken glass. The former causes the game of pool to happen (because we're getting antsy and competitive), and the latter is caused by the game of pool (because we're antsy, competitive and a bit lax with our drink placement). Because of this, we tend to go to bars that have pool tables... More »

  • 2003 | Best Chicago-Style Bar

The Dallas Morning News recently mentioned that it visited this downtown establishment and was dismayed by the fact it wasn't jam-packed with patrons. They point out that they showed up at 6 p.m. Now, far be it from us to call the folks at the daily paper idiots, but, ah, do you think you could try going to a bar after the sun goes down The last time we were in CT, it was hoppin': both levels full of folks enjoying the ambience (dark woods, big tables), the cold beer and the downtown scene.... This bar reminds me of Chicago with the dark wood and vertical layout. Has some of the best bar food you'll find in Downtown Dallas, and their music line-ups are always killer.

Really nice place. Lots of indie kids hanging around. They have some pretty decent shows come through too.
