In attempting to redefine Denver's sense of what a vegetarian restaurant should be, City, O' City has redefined what a vegetarian restaurant can be. It's part this, part that, a fusion of French, Mediterranean, Italian and goofy American herbivore tastes, like the result of a collision between a fast-moving coffeehouse and an airborne bistro that tangle midair, then drop through the roof of a hippie pizza joint and tofu warehouse and land on top of a wine salesman. It's also justifiably popular, a hippie-friendly hipster bistro that happens to serve some very good vegetarian food.

I have been going to City O' City for many years. The service and food were always hit or miss but we put up with it because my girlfriend has diet restrictions. The attitude of the employees has never been anywhere near what customer service should be. With the new larger restaurant after the remodel the service went even further down. They make you wait 20-30 minutes even when there are plenty of open seats. When I inquired about that, the response was that "they need to pace the kitchen". Ridiculous! They make you feel like it is a privilege to eat there and you must wait your turn...unless you are a hipster of course (I have seen them get seated first over others). It is like high school with the clicks. Once you are seated it is another 10-15 before they take your drink order. Don't try and order your food at the same time they won't let you. They tell you they are going to put your drink order in first and will be back to take your order. You will then have to wait to order food until your drink has been brought to you, this takes another 10-15 min. It will be about 20-30 min after being seated before you get food. By the way, the kitchen is now very visible so now you can witness first hand how unsanitary their food handling procedures are. I sat at the bar next to the kitchen and witnessed the pizza maker scratching his head and then handling pizza dough without washing his hands first. The guy on the grill kept reaching in his pocket to look at his phone and then go back to cooking. And the worst of all was witnessing the head chef of the kitchen (tall, curly, brown/blonde hair with a bandanna; I think his name is Brandon) lick his fingers after he dipped them in the sauce to check the seasoning and added some seasoning and then double dipped his gross finger he just licked. (ever heard of a spoon???). Bottom line hipsters are not known to be the cleanest bunch and most of them here do not practice proper sanitary procedures. They should where gloves if this is too difficult for them. So if you want to wait a ridiculous amount of time for overpriced unsanitary food this is the place for you!
Came to this restaurant based on a recommendation from a co-worker & absolutely loved it- I was in Denver from Phoenix, looking for a vegan-friendly place to eat. Wish we had a place like this in Phoenix! The pickled plate appetizer was awesome & the fork and knife sandwich was amazing... So great!
City, O' City is as good as it gets. Seriously, this place never ceases to amaze me and we have an interesting history. Before their remodel, I was introduced to City, O' by... well I don't know who or why, but I went. This place changed my perspective on food from the moment I walked in. I remember the first time I went into this small cabin-like-but-sophisticated-early 20th century or late 19th century but very modern establishment. I was happy to find the element of space and yet a certain kind of solidness to everything in the place. I was content with this for a long time and then I got sick of it. I just plain got sick of it. When this happens I generally never go back to a restaurant because they never change. Never in my wildest dreams (and they are WILD) did I think City, O' City would change. But it did. It changed A LOT. Not only did they renovate the entire space but they added an ENTIRE new portion, doubling the size and adding to my so coveted space, oh yeah and by the way they made, you know, AN ENTIRE NEW MENU (which really looks great, the fork and knife sandwich is... epic! What can I say about this renovation? INSPIRED LIFE FORCE ENERGY REVELATION! All I could think at first was how bold it is to have an open kitchen and cutlery chandeliers and random lounge comfort zones. Most of the time I would feel like the whole thing was a bit of a tragedy, with all it's boldness. But with COC the whole thing makes sense. The whole thing is a logical progression from the previous vision. To me, the change sort or resembles what happens when a very talented 20 something becomes a very talented 30 something. City, O' City has matured and it has matured for the better.
When we've maxed out our meat quota, the kitchen at City, O' City, one of Denver's few vegetarian restaurants, does a body good, especially at breakfast time. We're bewitched by the joint's savory waffle, a gluten-free marvel made with potato starch and tapioca flour, that's pelted with zucchini, flax seeds and carrots. Ringed with a creamy garlic-and-shallot-scented Taleggio sauce that's richer than Oprah, and topped with a crop of roasted root vegetables -- and an egg if you want it... More »
City, O' City got a new chef and a new interior this past year, but it wisely kept the burger known as the Maximus, a hearty quinoa-and-pinto-bean patty grilled and served up on a Kaiser with special sauce and cheddar. But not content with leaving well enough alone, Brendon Doyle devised an El Jefe option, which adds sautéed mushrooms, onion rings, hot-sauce aioli and a fried egg. Vegans can switch the cheddar out with non-dairy cheese and get rid of the egg; the result is still a... More »
There are some fantastic vegetarian restaurants in this town, but City, O' City rises above them all, boosted by several things. The first? The atmosphere is that of a slightly divey neighborhood bar -- albeit one with excellent food, a vast wine and beer list, free Wi-Fi and couches in the corner that make visitors feel free to spend hours tapping away on laptops while snacking on appetizers and sipping on beverages. The second: It's open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, offering... More »
Being in a rock-and-roll band typically doesn't pay the bills, and it seems like half of Denver's musicians earn their keep at either City, O' City or its sister restaurant, WaterCourse. And those who don't work here come here, anyway: Chella Negro has a song called "City O'," in honor of her time at this restaurant. We're not sure if it's the lack of meat, the inspirational quotes on the chalkboard above the bar or the Girl Scout cookies, but something about Denver's greenest hangout... More »
At City, O' City -- the all-things-to-all-people coffeehouse/restaurant/hangout that Dan and Michelle Landes opened in the former home of their original WaterCourse Foods -- everything is laptops and nose rings, hummus, leg hair, Lou Reed on the stereo and twig-and-berry ascetics swooning over fig pizzas and falafel. At night, the place draws big crowds. But we like it best in the morning, when the bulk of the square community is at work and the cool kids start coming in to salve... More »
When City, O' City opened in the former home of WaterCourse, it quickly became the talk of the town because it reminded everyone of that one really great coffeehouse/bar in Williamsburg...or was it in the Mission? No, Amsterdam! It's easy to see why a space where espresso drinkers can mingle with port sippers and pint guzzlers might make you think of an establishment very far away from Denver. But that's only if you saddle our city with an inferiority complex. In fact, this "down-tempo... More »
