Circus Bar is easy to miss. Off a small side street on McNab Road in Pompano Beach, the Circus Bar hides among loads of nondescript warehouses. But it wasn't always that way. The bar opened its doors in 1978, long before any of those faceless buildings popped up. Back then you could see the bar's white and red sign glowing from Powerline Road, several blocks away. Just the same, Circus Bar has built up a lot of good will among South Floridians, especially in-the-biz customers and the blue-collar crowd, which pack its smoky walls for shuffle-board tournaments, Texas Hold 'Em, electronic darts - they have a league - and pool. ESPN is what's on TV, like any typical sports bar. But the décor reminds you the Circus Bar is anything but. A little off-putting at first, the furnishings live up to the big-top theme with creepy clowns (one warns, "No Bozos!") and drawn caricatures of customers past and present. Somehow, though, the clowns, Budweiser, smoke, and unnatural lighting fuse for one of the most comfortable dive experiences in Broward.
