Description

The name of this place is so goofy it sounds like it was deliberately chosen to draw people who want to go to a Chinese restaurant but not eat authentic Chinese food. And yet, Chopsticks' menu is full of jellyfish and pig's intestines, as well as more recognizable American strip-mall grub. The kitchen always seems to be out of about half of what's on that menu, but once you find something you like, the portion size and careful control of flavors and textures more than make up for any petty annoyances.

Chopsticks is a strange restaurant: It's one of the city's most authentic Chinese spots, yet it also serves some completely inauthentic dishes. At Chopsticks, you can eat Chinese pocket sandwiches full of delicious, saucy, shredded meat or completely non-threatening chicken lo mein -- and then, halfway through your meal, decide that what you really want is a little cold jellyfish salad or a plate of flaming pig intestines, and then get that, too, without having to change restaurants or... For the adventurous, there's cold jellyfish salad, flaming pig intestine, "three cup sauce frog with basil" and... More »

There are many reasons that I'm so cuckoo for the Cocoa Puffs of ethnic and peasant cuisines, and one is my theory that cuisine constitutes the genetics of civilization. Imagine a slice of pizza. A really good slice of pizza -- perfect New York-... More »

Why in the hell would you eat that?" I get asked that a lot. Most often by my wife. "No, I mean seriously, Jay. Whole fish and sea bugs and chicken ass -- why?" Because they're good, I tell her (or anyone else who corners me with The Questio... More »
