The competition for best Indian buffet boiled down to two places. Chola cops the prize (runner-up: Utsav), not only for the excellence and fecundity of its meat and poultry, and its willingness to offer items outside the standard Mughal canon, but because the waiter appeared with unexpected freebies at various junctures during the meal, setting down a tiny dosa, a plate of veggie fritters, and oil-brushed bread.

    Chola is a pricey haven for discerning eaters of Indian food. The menu breezes through several regional styles, many unavailable in cheaper renditions. There's "more kozhambu"--baby okra and spongy dumplings in a mustardy stew thickened with buttermilk--and avial malabar, a saucy vegetable combination from the former Dutch colony of Cochin.
