No one can deny the best fish and chips are always done by the British, so don't be surprised that one of NYC's best fish and chips joints is decidedly over anglicized. The Chip Shop, located originally in Park Slope, is unabashedly over the top about British cuisine, and the enthusiasm stretches from the menu to the decor--which is more Sex Pistols than countryside manor. The battered cod and chips is good enough for someone looking for classic Brit street food, but for something a little different, the Chip Shop offers a collection of shepherds pies, cauliflower cheese with mash and peas, or a speckled hen stew over mashed potatoes. For the adventurously unhealthy, there's a whole gaggle of fried chocolate bars available, and if you've already shoved a Sports-spread worth of fried food down your gullet, why not top it off with a fried candy bar? --Shane Barnes
The attempt at Cockney slang notwithstanding, the fish and chips at Park Slope's CHIP SHOP are superb. My fave is cod--crisp and mellow, with that slightly skanky edge that only carefully aged grease can confer. If you know what's good for you, skip the Brit culinary obsessions like mushy peas and deep-fried candy bars. More »
