Description

Chez Thuy's menu is a history lesson told in food, the room a casually shabby clearinghouse of a thousand spices, the board reflecting a mingling of the French and Vietnamese obsessions with dining. It's a family place, friendly and welcoming to regulars and newcomers alike, with enough variety to keep people coming back for years.

  • 2006 | BEST PLACE TO GET CRABS

There are moments when you just know you've eaten one of the best somethings of your life -- the best chili dog, the best foie gras, the best what-have-you. From the first bite of a soft-shell crab at Chez Thuy, we knew it was the best we'd eat in our lives -- until we came back and had an even better one. The soft-shell crabs are deep-fried whole, and the beautiful golden batter, just a little spicy, comes crisp out of the oil. Inside that jacket, the shells are chewy, yielding and full of... More »

  • 2005 | Best Fried Crabs

They're simple little things, the soft-shell crabs at Chez Thuy -- deep-fried whole, with a beautiful golden batter crisp out of the oil and just a little spicy, the shells inside chewy, yielding and full of juicy meat. So you can be forgiven if you go a little nuts when the crabs (served two or three to an order) are brought to the table with a whole... More »

  • 2005 | Best French-Vietnamese Restaurant

Since it moved into this stand-alone strip-mall space in 1993, Chez Thuy has been offering history lessons told in food. It's a casually shabby clearinghouse with menus as thick as a world atlas, each outlining the story of the cuisine of Vietnam, which, in the historical record, reads like a murderous, ill-fated yet oddly fortuitous collision of cultures and a thousand spices. When the French first came to Indochina, they did so with guns, funny hats and an idea of colonial law absolutely... More »

One of the best Vietnamese restaurants in the country, Dac Hoa, is in Rochester, New York. It's a small, Barton Fink-ish place, with a perpetual pall of dishwater gray light, rickety tables and peeling everything in a borderline-creepy neighborhoo... More »
