This mobile kitchen operated by two local culinary pros, Carrie Summer and Lisa Carlson, dispels misconceptions about mediocre street food every Saturday morning during the Mill City Farmers' Market and Sundays at the Kingfield Farmers' Market. Summer handles the sweets, and Carlson, the chef at Spoonriver, handles the savory offerings, and both use many local, organic ingredients from the market. Favorite foods include the bison burger, with a gamey, peppery flavor that's tasty enough to eat undressed--but don't, the homemade condiments are too good to miss. The ribs, though impossible to eat with a plastic spork, are fantastic, as is the grilled asparagus with frothy lemon aioli. The Indian-spiced mini donuts are good enough to forget all about the health kick that brought you to the mostly organic, upscale market in the first place, and the crème brûlée--topped with caramelized bananas, triple-chocolate coconut cookies, and softly whipped cream--is the best version in town. Trailer treasure, indeed!
A street-food truck affectionately known as a "shack" isn't typically where you expect to find an experienced pastry chef honing her craft, but that's exactly where Carrie Summer spreads the gospel of Indian-spiced mini-doughnuts, lush chocolate mousse, and cooked-to-crack crème brûlée. The Chef Shack's Summer has worked in kitchens as varied as Cue, Spoonriver, and Taher, but now she's taken her fine-dining dessert sensibilities to the street, and never has $5 been spent... More »
By now you've tried all the Chef Shack staples, right? Sat yourself down on the curb at Kingfield's farmers' market or the Guthrie steps at Mill City's and tucked into a Thousand Hills hot dog, Buffalo Gal bison burger, or Fischer Farms pulled-pork sandwich (smothered with homemade condiments, natch), then followed it up with a bag of the Indian-spiced mini-doughnuts, chocolate mousse, or the torched-to-order crème brûlée? Well, you've just scratched the surface of Carrie... More »
We're dreaming of spring for about a million reasons, and one of the main ones is Chef Shack. When the little white trailer pulls up to the market (Mill City in Minneapolis, Marketfest in White Bear Lake), it's time for a hand-pattied bison burger, a tongue taco, or a pulled pork sandwich made with meats from the best local vendors. Who cares if it's nine in the morning? Two enterprising, fine-dining-trained chefs, Lisa Carlson and Carrie Summer, put a gourmet/sustainable spin on street-food... More »

Few foods on earth are as glorious and as worthless as the doughnut. Even pizza has some nutritional value, but a doughnut is strictly about the endorphin rush of dough, sugar, and grease. Though they... More »

If you think a burger's just a ground-beef patty slapped between bun halves, you probably don't live in Minnesota. Here we take our burgers as seriously as Easterners do their pastrami and Southerners do their barbecue. We can probably blame this... More »
