Description

This Chinatown shop offers a taste of New Orleans in a space barely bigger than a closet. Owner Din Yates, a New Orleans transplant, cooks up beignets every morning, puffy, powdered sugar-dusted little treats available as soon as the restaurant opens at 8am, as is a homemade biscuit sandwich that pairs eggs and Muenster cheese. As the restaurant closes at the early hour of 6pm, the rest of the menu is devoted to lunch, specifically in the form of sandwiches. Po'boys filled with either fried shrimp or fried oysters (or both, if you order a half-and-half), veggie muffalettas and braised short ribs stuffed inside of challah bread are all available with a bag of Louisiana-produced Zapp's Potato Chips. Even the beverages hail from the Crescent City: Big Shot sodas and chicory-blend coffee. The restaurant is small but cute, with white picket fences in front and a large mural of artist Blue Logan's friends painted on the wall.—Keith Wagstaff

A good po'boy is no longer hard to find in New York. For one of the best, head over to Cheeky Sandwiches and order the Half-and-Half: That's half fried shrimp, half fried oysters. While you wait, listen to the sweet sound of cornmeal-battered seafood hitting hot oil. Once fried, it's tucked into a squishy but resilient white roll with mayo, tart Louisiana-style hot sauce, pickle slices, lettuce, and tomatoes. The seafood is crusty and warm against the cool lettuce and mayo; the hot sauce and... More »
