A freestanding roadhouse located just south of Camelback Road, Char's features various Valley blues, funk, R&B, and soul artists performing seven nights a week for music aficionados who also get some stick time playing pool or sipping bourbon with friends.

    My raves are few and not for dive bars. When I went to Char for the jam I was just updating my been there list. I did not expect to find a Bywater joint from NOLA in a dusty corner of soulless Phoenix but stepping in the vibe felt like home and it was no surprise to see beads and French Q street signs hidden in a corner. Add Kermit Ruffins and a bowl of gumbo self serve and they'd have the whole feel. The crowd fit the vibe as did the house band Bad Boyz...excellent vocals and blues guitar. Could go on but need to catch them another night. They are one of my very few Phoenix can be cool spots.
