For years, this swishy CenPho saloon was known as the "lil bitty ol' pissant country place" that almost exclusively attracted only tight-Wranglered gay folk and Marlboro Mary's. But times have changed and so has Charlie's. A renovation last year has improved the décor and expanded its size considerably, offering a much larger dance floor on which a far more diverse crowd can either bust out with two-steppin' or shake their asses to high-energy dance, country music, and Latin-oriented jams all night. Some things haven't changed; there's still the always-muscular bartending staff and after-hours dancing until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
The Cajuns have a particular phrase to describe having a memorable time and it goes something like, "Laissez les bons temps rouler." While our French Creole is a tad bit rusty, the saying roughly tran... More »

Charlie's probably only deserves three stars. First, when this place is busy (which is pretty much the norm) dirty glasses and empty beer bottles tend to pile-up. Second, when using a card to pay - the bartender charges your card in $20 increments and gives you the change in cash. Third, since the joint is so popular and open until 4, there tend to be several people who can't remember their own names roaming around causing chaos.
The redeeming factor here is that the dance floor is always popping, and large enough that you can get lost within the sea of people trying to pound it into the floor. The drinks are also pretty accessible since there are usually three counters open in various parts of the bar. There is also a great food truck that (I hear) has great tacos.
Even with all of it's flaws it's almost hard to not have a good time here, so 5 stars it is.
There's very little in the way of after-hours action here in the PHX other than a handful of danceterias daring to stay open after last call. On the constant lookout for additional all-night venues to stage their post-2 a.m. shenanigans, nightcrawlers of the Valley have been flocking to this Western-themed gay bar on Fridays and Saturdays to dance and debauch until the early morn. It's not just Brokeback Mountain-men who visit Charlie's after local bars close -- insomniacs of every flavor o... More »
