Downtown Gilbert is known for its culinary offerings (see: Joe's BBQ, Liberty Market, and Joe's Farm Grill), but Champions Sports Saloon puts in a serious bid as the area's premier dive bar. Dive may not be the correct world for Champions. Though fondly remembered as The Coin, which was a genuine dive, in the best sense of the word, Champions has received a spit-shine in recent years, though the management has had the good sense to leave the rougher edges intact.
The glowing neon sign beams proudly onto the street, beckoning visitors to investigate its wood-paneled interior. The bar's original register still sits proudly on the wall, accompanied by a slew of dartboards, a vintage Galaga/Ms. Pacman Machine, and a glowing Monster Mash pinball machine -- with a patron's high score scrawled on a piece of paper and taped onto the machine itself, a sign of the kind of person you'd want to hang out with for sure.
