Somehow ice skating looses its romantic zest indoors. At Centennial Lakes Park, for at least three months a year, skaters can feel as if they've fallen inside a Norman Rockwell painting, gliding throughout the park's three main ponds connected by narrow, winding canals. When tired, snuggle up with your partner at the rink-side warming house, where fireplaces crackle at both ends. The ice skating is free, skate rental is $4—and don't miss the chance to rent a Norwegian ice sled. (Where else can you do that?)

Till then, though, this wonderland-ish rink might be Edina's premier attraction (depending on how you feel about Southdale). It features three big ponds connected by canals, making for more interesting routes than the standard circular monotony. The nearby office parks keep the setting from being exactly paradisiacal, but it's more than pleasant--quaint but not cute.... More »

  • 2005 | BEST PLACE TO ICE SKATE

In case you haven't noticed, this is a state with a frigid climate and more than 12,000 lakes. Add in the various hockey arenas and hose-watered park rinks and it's obvious that places to skate are as plentiful, idiosyncratic, and (in many cases) as convenient as your neighborhood laundromat or hardware store. So we'll pitch this pick to the uninitiated skaters, the tots, or the transplants from other parts of the country. Unlike the Milwaukee Depot, a beautiful, enclosed rink in downtown... More »
