Description

In addition to workshops and exhibits, CELLspace - a sort of artist collective (the "CELL" stands for Collectively Explorative Learning Labs) in the Mission - also featured semi-regular electronica parties, acrobatic circus showcases, roller disco nights, dance and theater performances, and other unique events in its cavernous main room. As of late 2012, the space transferred hands and became the venue known as Inner Mission.

Community Art Center CELLspace to Become For-Profit Entity Inner Mission

Full Disclosure: I was a core collective member of the CELLspace Community Arts Center from 2000 until 2007. During that time I lived in a small box in the ceiling, sat through more "ritual theater"... More »

Do you like blood? No, do you really like blood? San Francisco-based theater troupe The Primitive Screwheads do, and they're ready to spew it all over the theater and the audience in ShEvil Dead. We have reason to believe it's fake blood, but... More »

Cabaret Bastille's Memorable Moments: High Costumery, Joyce Read Loud -- and Dog Porn

Cabaret Bastille at Cellspace was almost a smashing good time. I admit I am disproportionately delighted by parties with costume themes, and there were some glorious vintage and vintage-inspired get... More »

  • 2006 | Best Community Art Center

A sprawling 10,000 square feet of pristine warehouse, CELLspace is the kind of place that makes you marvel at art's democratic possibilities. The "CELL" part stands for the unduly techy-sounding Collectively Explorative Learning Labs, but the space is an arts and education mecca that reaches people through a variety of mediums: arts and crafts, drawing, painting, theater, performance, dance, and some seriously creative activism. Low rental fees, novel seminars, and dirt-cheap events that... More »
