The venerated Celebrity Theatre is truly unequaled amongst Valley concert venues, not only for its unique theatre-in-the-round setup, where no seat is more than 70 feet from the action, and rotating stage, but also because a big chunk of local music history has taken place within its walls over the past 50 years. Since opening in 1963, the 2650-seat venue is currently one of the longest-running concert halls in Phoenix and has featured gigs by some of the biggest names from the pantheon of rock ‘n’ roll. The late Frank Zappa, for instance, put on a memorable performance with the Mothers of Invention in 1974, while Guns ‘N’ Roses visited during the apex of the hair metal era in 1988, and Limp Bizkit took over the joint just prior to the beginning of the late-1990s nu-metal boom. The Celebrity has also hosted such comedy legends as Jerry Seinfeld, George Carlin, and Chris Rock during its five decades of existence.

In 2013, we've reached the point where Beatles tribute bands should, given the time that's elapsed, have some of their own tribute bands by now. 1964 the Tribute — that's their name — has been re-creating the British Invasion-era Beatles since... More »
Prince will not be playing anywhere this weekend. He's surprised me before, but I'm willing to make the call now and just be wrong if he shows up at "Rock the Purple," which is not what you think it i... More »
It's easy to wonder why some bands continue to perform at all. Just look at all the formerly larger-than-life acts now relegated to the casino circuit. Ratt isn't part of the casino circuit, but they once were larger than life. Essentially... More »
Unlike those dusty, old monoliths in Washington D.C., the divergent world of hip-hop has long since abandoned two-party partisanship. Thanks to the slow, steady ascendancy of the Dirty South in all its guttural glory, East and West Coasters alike... More »
If you've never experienced a theater in the round, get thee hence to the Celebrity. It's got a rotating stage that's great for everything from stand-up comedy to death metal concerts, and not a bad seat in the house. It's cozier than most big-time venues, and it makes for a much more intimate and memorable concert experience. The Celebrity is a Valley treasure, and I hope it never gets knocked down to make room for another glass skyscraper.
The musicians, singers, and comedians that hit the stage at Celebrity Theatre not only get to perform in the round but get to experience the rotating stage, which may be as unique an experience for them as it is for us. How do we know? Well, Celebrity stage newbies tend to remark on their rotation virginity, while returning artists often express their fondness for the ride. The circular motion is slow enough not to be jarring for performers and playfully pumps up the intimacy that Celebrity is known for. If all the world's a stage, it's nice to see a stage that mimics the world right back.

With a maximum capacity of 2,600, Celebrity Theatre may not be the biggest concert venue in the Valley, but therein lies the charm. No seat is farther than 75 feet from the stage, making this venue the only one in Phoenix where the phrase "not a bad seat in the house" really holds true. Because of the enclosed space and the circular seating around the stage, the acoustics are excellent -- which may be one reason the venue still draws national acts like Heart, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and... Off the beaten path of most concertgoers, this Phoenix landmark's signature revolving stage is still spinning after all these years. With no seat farther than 75 feet from the stage, Celebrity Theatre presents intimacy incomparable to other competing concert venues. Since its creation in 1963, the Celebrity has hosted a stunning list of entertainers that includes Chris Rock, George Carlin, Smashing Pumpkins, Duran Duran, Garth Brooks, Brian Setzer, Carol Channing, and Diana Ross. But beware:... More »
The famed rotating stage at Phoenix's Celebrity Theatre is a simply grand venue that's your best dollar-to-value bet for big-name live acts in the Valley. Nestled snugly in a part of town that is "rich in character" (i.e., near the women's prison), the Celebrity continues to expand its stylistic mandate, booking top-rank performers of all stripes -- gospel, country, neo-metal, Henry Rollins to Kids in the Hall -- into its copious space. The featured performer's long walk from the dressing... More »
Despite the outdated façade and the less than, um, stellar location -- right off a bleak stretch of Van Buren, abutting a women's correctional facility -- the Celebrity Theatre continues to be the best spot to view the entire musical spectrum up close and personal. After all, where else in town can you get an equally good view of Belinda Carlisle's prodigious ass and Burt Bacharach's prodigious teeth? While the Celebrity's unique appeal has remained unchanged, the venue has... More »
