  • 2008 | Best Musical Carousel

The musicians, singers, and comedians that hit the stage at Celebrity Theatre not only get to perform in the round but get to experience the rotating stage, which may be as unique an experience for them as it is for us. How do we know Well, Celebrity stage newbies tend to remark on their rotation virginity, while returning artists often express their fondness for the ride. The circular motion is slow enough not to be jarring for performers and playfully pumps up the intimacy that Celebrity... More »

  • 2007 | BEST VENUE FOR NATIONAL MUSIC ACTS

With a maximum capacity of 2,600, Celebrity Theatre may not be the biggest concert venue in the Valley, but therein lies the charm. No seat is farther than 75 feet from the stage, making this venue the only one in Phoenix where the phrase "not a bad seat in the house" really holds true. Because of the enclosed space and the circular seating around the stage, the acoustics are excellent -- which may be one reason the venue still draws national acts like Heart, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and... • 2005 | BEST PLACE TO WATCH SOMEONE SIT AND ROTATE

Off the beaten path of most concertgoers, this Phoenix landmark's signature revolving stage is still spinning after all these years. With no seat farther than 75 feet from the stage, Celebrity Theatre presents intimacy incomparable to other competing concert venues. Since its creation in 1963, the Celebrity has hosted a stunning list of entertainers that includes Chris Rock, George Carlin, Smashing Pumpkins, Duran Duran, Garth Brooks, Brian Setzer, Carol Channing, and Diana Ross. But beware:... More »

  • 2001 | Best Venue For National Acts

The famed rotating stage at Phoenix's Celebrity Theatre is a simply grand venue that's your best dollar-to-value bet for big-name live acts in the Valley. Nestled snugly in a part of town that is "rich in character" (i.e., near the women's prison), the Celebrity continues to expand its stylistic mandate, booking top-rank performers of all stripes -- gospel, country, neo-metal, Henry Rollins to Kids in the Hall -- into its copious space. The featured performer's long walk from the dressing... More »

  • 2000 | Best Place to See a National Act

Despite the outdated façade and the less than, um, stellar location -- right off a bleak stretch of Van Buren, abutting a women's correctional facility -- the Celebrity Theatre continues to be the best spot to view the entire musical spectrum up close and personal. After all, where else in town can you get an equally good view of Belinda Carlisle's prodigious ass and Burt Bacharach's prodigious teeth While the Celebrity's unique appeal has remained unchanged, the venue has... If you've never experienced a theater in the round, get thee hence to the Celebrity. It's got a rotating stage that's great for everything from stand-up comedy to death metal concerts, and not a bad seat in the house. It's cozier than most big-time venues, and it makes for a much more intimate and memorable concert experience. The Celebrity is a Valley treasure, and I hope it never gets knocked down to make room for another glass skyscraper.

If all the world's a stage, it's nice to see a stage that mimics the world right back.
