As a pseudo bar-cade and punk venue, CBGBs carries the dive bar aesthetic on its sleeve. GBGB has cheap beer, good jams and great people. Grab a cold PBR and hit the arcade cocktail table or the Pac-Man machine. Shuffeboard, pinball and darts provide more entertainment options in the next room. On a lucky night, the bar gets packed with show-goers and live music, ranging from dirty bar rock to snotty punk. Plenty of ashtrays and bar stools occupy the space, so smokers won’t need to bear the weather of the outside world. However, for the outdoor-inclined, a spacious patio with wooden benches provides ample seating. The building itself looks distinctly St. Louis, carrying with it a classic style preserved by punk culture. CBGB stands as the solid regular hang for the brazen barfly.

This week's picks feature three rather large (as in a lot of bands) festival-type shows -- four if you count the 90s-fest happening at Verizon on Tuesday. On Friday, STL is the Movement 3 will go down... More »
Well, Saturday night's Music Showcase was, on our end anyway, a rousing success! The night was hectic, fast-moving and filled with people (possible record numbers this year -- in addition to the stell... More »
This weekend is Cinco de Mayo, which for all of you non Spanish-speaking types translates literally to "The Five of Mayo". What this cryptic phrase actually means is unclear, as is the origin of the ... More »

Small, fun bar on South Grand, and you've gotta love the Light Bright! They don't really get going until right before they close, but their beer is cheap and they're a quick walk to/from many other bars in the area!
You don't expect much in the way of bathroom cleanliness from a bar where the front doorknob is held in place with duct tape. After a few gasoline-strength drinks, you'll be happy if someone hasn't thrown up on the seat. You might be just a little taken aback, however, when you find that instead of a single toilet or stalls, the graffiti-covered bathroom holds two toilets facing each other, separated by a mere card table. We ladies do like to go to the restroom together. And look: there's an... More »
How underground of a club is CBGB? They don't have a MySpace profile. They don't have a Friendster account. They don't have a Web site. Hell, they don't even have a phone number. News of shows spreads via word-of-mouth (or by showing up to inquire what's going on). It's so 1995 -- in the best, photocopied-zine sort of way. Locals (faves include Sex Robots and Bunnygrunt) and out-of-town bands alike prowl the stage, the back wall of which happens to be CBGB's front window. Even on a Monday th... More »
From the multi-machine majesty of Dave and Buster's to the simplicity of the corner coffee shop, there are many places in St. Louis to play pinball. So what makes CBGB, a smallish bar with one lone machine, the best place to play? One word: atmosphere. On any night but Sunday aspiring wizards and seasoned ballers alike can enjoy a game for 25 cents a pop while drinking on the cheap and listening to a wonderfully eclectic and varied music selection (anything from Sun Ra and Coltrane to David...
