Things you should know about mezcal: a) it is made from the maguey plant, a cousin of the blue agave plant used to make tequila b) it¹s roasted in small patches in pits in the earth, resulting in an intense, smoky flavor c) it will get you very drunk. The many hard-to-find mezcals served here can be ordered both straight-up or in specialty cocktails. Get your buzz on because the vibe here is definitely dark and flirty. The first floor of this three-story bar hosts a dance floor for live music and dancing. Most of the action takes place on the second floor where colorful string lights hanging from the ceiling cast a seductive glow on the red walls and cozy banquettes. The kitchen churns out small bites that you won't find at your standard burrito joint: melted cheese with grasshoppers and tomato, braised lamb in a chipotle sauce, tacos filled with pork cooked in a dry ancho chile and garlic sauce, and much more.—Keith Wagstaff

The first thing everyone will tell you about Casa Mezcal: You can munch on a bowl of fried grasshoppers while sipping on your drink. Yes, this is an interesting little oddity, and yes, the grasshoppers actually do taste pretty good (no, really), but lost in this bit of culinary tourism is the fact that Casa Mezcal has so much more to offer than an exotic twist on bar nuts. We'll break it down floor-by-floor: Underground, the basement offers a performance space where you might find anything... More »
At first, Casa Mezcal doesn't seem a budget-friendly sort of place--drinkers slurp at snifters of sipping-quality mezcal or meticulously made cocktails. But just wait until the free snacks start to arrive: First, super-sweet oranges dredged in smoky-dark chile powder are plunked down with your drinks, then better-than-usual homemade tortilla chips and guacamole. Or perhaps you'd rather dip that chip in queso con chorizo. Best, or at least most interesting, of all is a bowl of fried... More »
