Description

Anomalously located just down the street from Jersey's most hopping Indian neighborhood and only a few blocks north of Journal Square, Casa Dante is a staid, well lit, wood-paneled room populated with scurrying waiters in tuxedos. The restaurant has elevated Italian-American cuisine to some of its grandest heights. Never has scungilli salad been so refreshing, the delicate translucent slices of conch bathed in olive oil and garlic. Great, too, is the linguine with filetto de pomadoro sauce, a rich tomato concoction laced with prosciutto. And the overheard conversations from the other tables are half the fun.

    Though we were tempted to treat the 13th-century poet to a truly hellish meal at one of Frank Bruni's favorite places to thank him (Dante, not Bruni) for mapping hell in The Divine Comedy, our better side won out, and so we decided to take him to his namesake restaurant, Casa Dante in Jersey City, where we'll regale him with Italian-American fare.
