Carmine's on Penn has held down its corner of Pennsylvania and Bayaud since 1994. When the restaurant opened, it was intended as a place where big groups could converge and enjoy themselves without thinking too much about what they were eating -- ordering big platters of Italian food served family-style. Parties still come for that experience, filling the bar, the dining room, and a patio that's sealed against the elements by heavy canvas. And quantity continues to rule over quality: The kitchen remains devoted to the idea of putting out a roster of enormous dishes, cooking up red-sauce Italian classics and such accoutrements as minestrone. Be careful when you order: The portions are so large that it's easy to overload on this food, and many of the recommended dishes do not come cheap.
For nearly twenty years, Carmine's on Penn Italian Restaurant has been stuffing Denver with its heaping bowls of gourmet pasta. Though Carmine's pricing is often as bloated as its patrons' bellies -- ... More »
By the time our entrees arrived at Carmine's on Penn, I had a nearly irrepressible urge to turn to the next table -- a gaggle of beefy men who'd just sat down -- and explain that we three relatively normal-sized women had not come in to eat like... More »
I love the dizzying pace at which restaurants open in this city, bringing us new culinary visions and new gastronomic possibilities from new (and sometimes not-so-new) chefs. But there are times when ... More »
Once upon a time, in a land not so very far away, there was a restaurant ruled by a king named Larry. Now, King Larry wasn't an evil king. He wasn't cruel or ruthless, as kings so often are. He didn't abuse the peasantry of Hotcakesland,... More »
Q: I'm getting married in June, and because my fiancé's parents live out of state, they want us to choose the place for the rehearsal dinner. I was wondering if you could suggest some not-so-pricey restaurants that can accommodate about thirty... More »
in my hood, worth the price great food!
Great Italian. Reminds me of the good Italian food I had on the East Coast usually made from someone who is from Italy. kinda expensive though, good date place
One of my favorite spots. The more people you have, the better - you'll spend less and eat more!
A "family-style" restaurant is almost always synonymous with a very, very bad restaurant. Not so with Carmine's on Penn, where gigantic plates and pastas served by the pound receive all the care and attention normally seen only at very fussy, regular-size-plate restaurants. Here, tables groan under deep bowls of linguine with white clam sauce and gigantic platters of pasta Montana with chicken and asparagus drenched in gallons of cream sauce. Carmine's is so popular that there's usually a... More »
We've got an offer -- and a restaurant -- you can't refuse. After six years and a few management changes, Carmine's on Penn has finally hit its stride. Not only is this one of the best family-style eateries around, it's also the best Italian, any style. The atmosphere is welcoming, the servers efficient, the wine list impressive, and the food incredible. These dishes are all about vibrant flavors, well-cooked pastas, tender, tasty meats and huge portions that are suitable for sharing like a... More »
