New Mexico-style Mexican food served in a cave-like setting, complete with bats and gushing waterfalls. The kitchen sends out nothing but winners, from traditional favorites like carne adovada and blue corn enchiladas to nifty platters like pork osso buco and chicken breasts stuffed with sun-dried tomato, spinach, pepper and feta. First-rate margaritas, too
One of the finest examples of a regional guilty pleasure in the desert Southwest is the green chile cheeseburger. While it's more of a New Mexico specialty (where the green chile shares State Vegetabl... More »

The other night, we wanted Mexican food for dinner. We didn't really know where to go, so we headed to Old Town. There we found Carlsbad Tavern. A friend had recommended it, and we were impressed by the decor as soon as we walked in. Pretty sure Batman eats here! We grabbed a table outside, and were excited to see a happy hour on Saturday night. The prices weren't that impressive, but they had a nice draft beer list and some interesting appetizer options. We ordered some crab cakes and ended up splitting some free chips and salsa thanks to Yelp. Make sure you check-in using Yelp for an order of chips and salsa. They provide you with two different salsas, one that is to die for! They have a good menu, and everything we ordered for dinner was delicious. We left full, and four of us ate for $50. (Note that two of us split an entree.) I would totally go back, if nothing else for the bats!
We're not vindictive, really. We wish the best for that yellow-bellied, sneaky, lying hunk of flesh we've been dating. We certainly don't want to hurt anyone's feelings with a breakup. So we'll let Carlsbad do the talking. We'll bring our loser, er, lover in for dinner. A romantic evening out, we'll say. Don't bother with a menu, we know exactly what you need, we'll insist. And then we'll order the chile cheeseburger for them. We won't bother to mention that this isn't just any Anaheim... More »
What is it with casual Valley restaurants putting us on a patio where we're face-to-face with the car bumpers that crowd strip malls? Carlsbad Tavern is having none of that. This funky, New Mexican eatery had adapted its building along busy Hayden Road to take advantage of its virtues.Originally a seafood restaurant, the property wraps around a Disney-style "pier" overlooking an "ocean" that's more blue-painted concrete moat than splashing shore. Thick, tall stucco walls seclude the patio... More »
