Though it's hidden in the shadows off South Dixie Highway, there's hardly ever an empty table at Captain's Tavern. This unassuming local favorite seafood restaurant is decorated in a style that can best be described as seafarin' Seventies. It's a magnet for large families and old folks, and the menu is vast. Hot and cold appetizers range from $2 oysters to a $17 king crab cocktail. Lobster bisque is exceptional, and the conch chowder - served with a thimble-size shot of sherry - is spicy and strong. Coconut shrimp come with a sweet, slightly peppery dipping sauce. Entrées offer myriad possibilities: Order the fried oyster caesar salad to keep things (kind of) healthful, or try a fish dish. Fillets come either lightly breaded and fried, or baked to perfection, all with a dazzling array of toppings from which to choose. Many patrons favor the yum yum sauce (zesty green onions, lemongrass, and chive teriyaki), but the "à la Paulo" - a white wine, mushroom, and garlic reduction that perfectly complements yellowtail - stole our hearts. Cocktails are potent, $6 martinis are popular, and the mai tai is a certified ass-kicker. For dessert, try the chocolate pizza.
It was a warm Sunday afternoon, and Brickell's high-rises loomed on the hazy horizon beyond the nearby Miami River. Quaint fishing boats bobbed on the water's rippling surface, and rays of sunlight glimmered upon the soft waves. But a few steps... More »

This old-fashioned family seafood restaurant boasts large aquariums, filled with live exotic fish, that surround the restaurant's eating area. We recommend going on Tuesdays for two-for-one Maine lobster (market price). And what better way to wash down some fresh lobster than with a bottle of fine wine? There is no wine list here; it's more like a telephone book-size tome. The best vino for your buck is a bottle of Martin Codax for $19. Described as an "elegant, full-bodied white wine with... More »

BEST CONCH FRITTER Captain's Tavern 9621 S. Dixie Highway Pinecrest 305-666-5979 People can respectfully disagree about what the best thing is about Captain's Tavern. There are those who insist that the experience of Bill (the captain) and Audrey Bowers, who've helmed ship for more than 30 years, is what makes this beloved family fish house sail smoothly. (The paneled walls, padded captain's chairs, and faux-nautical kitsch would probably not top most folks' lists, but it is sort of... More »
Bill "the Captain" Bowers owns and operates this 33-year-old landmark (with the indispensable help of wife Audrey). He'll soon turn 75, but he refuses to retire. "I just can't get enough of the restaurant business," he says. "It's been a great ride and I love what I do." He also loves wine, and can't help sharing his enthusiasm. In that regard, you might say he's been on a mission. Back in 1996 he told this paper: "A bottle of wine shouldn't be the center of the conversation. It should be... More »
