Don't be put off by Captain Benny's boat-shaped restaurants that litter the city; these low-key seafood joints are some of the best places to grab inexpensive, reliably good Gulf oysters in season. Sit at the "bow" of the ship inside and they'll be shucked right in front of you. The rest of the year, Captain Benny's specializes in Cajun standards and fried seafood platters that will please even the pickiest eaters.
Think that tai sushi you're eating is red snapper? It's far more likely to be tilapia, says Oceana, a Washington, D.C.-based ocean conservancy organization. This isn't a new concern, of course. Former... More »

A kittycat and a Kool-Aid: Twenty years ago, that meant an order of catfish and a Coors beer at Captain Benny's Half Shell [8506 South Main, (713)666-5469]. It has been more than a decade since the Cap'n's original boat slipped down Main Street... More »
The good Captain always delivers! It is especially great this time of year as it cools off because you can sit outside and have a couple of beers and just relax. We get the stuffed peppers which are my favorite stuffed jalapeƱos in town. They are filled with cheese and shredded crab meat and fried nice and fat. Then we split the fried seafood platter with shrimp, fish and oysters. everythimg has such solid flavor without being too greasy. If we aren't starving we will each just get gumbo and some oysters. Everything is always fresh and the service is quick. Love this place.
Want to vary your fare from hardtack and salmagundi but don't want to reach too deep into your chest of doubloons? Climb aboard this old-school Houston survivor. Housed in what looks like a shrimp boat broken from its moorings and marooned on South Main, Captain Benny's serves raw oysters that are always juicy and flavorful, and the cold boiled shrimp are always iced down right and second to none. Whipping up your own shrimp dipping sauce is always fun -- squeeze some fresh lemon in... More »
Captain Benny's Half Shell Oyster Bar This small tugboat-shaped eatery, nestled almost out of sight off South Main, is a happy docking place for a diverse array of diners with a lust for crustaceans and other fare from la mer. Folks know that if it's fried or on the half-shell, it's fresh. And just a glance at the clientele proves there's a seafood fan in all of us: A diverse group of patrons converges here. You'll find folks in Sunday-go-to-meetin' duds, business suits, punk dos and... More »
Some people refer to journalists as bottom-feeders. Well, as long as there are crustaceans like the ones served up at the Captain's around, we will consider ourselves in good company. Since the restaurant is best known for its oysters on the half shell, the cold boiled shrimp sometimes get overlooked, but not by us. Never overcooked, these large pink beauties are spiced just right, always firm and fresh, and always cold. Make your own dipping sauce with condiments that include ketchup,... More »
