Cappy’s Café in Newport Beach is an old-school American breakfast spot. There has been a Cappy's on the north side of Pacific Coast Highway between Superior and Prospect avenues since 1957; the current owners should wear throwback jerseys—and not just because they've kept the joint grungily retro. Breakfast portions are as huge as they are delicious, which, along with the shapely and friendly waitstaff, ensures Cappy's is jammed on weekends. Start by shaking the sleep out of your eyes with a stiffly poured Bloody. You can always switch to black-as-night (and hot-as-hell) coffee to wash down your hubcap-sized slice of ham. Are those eggs any way you like 'em underneath that former section of Babe? Why, yes, they are. A large platter stacked high with mouth-watering pancakes will also have you delaying your diet until another morning. The prices, while not quite hearkening back to the Eisenhower administration, are reasonable for these times. And a stretch of sand on which to beach your bloated ass beckons just across PCH.
