One of my favorite springtime rituals is finding purple hull peas at Canino's -- the massive farmers' market complex on Airline at Loop 610 -- and picking up the ingredients for a good, old-fashioned ... More »
By the time you read this, I will be on a plane home to Houston from Las Vegas, where I will have hopefully won $1,000,000 off a nickel slot machine and eaten at the Wicked Spoon -- which, from what I... More »
It's possible to walk out of Canino Produce Co. with a good week's supply of produce for less than $20, which may be the least interesting thing about the sprawling warehouse-like facility on Airline Drive. Opened in 1958 and now occupying more than 20,000 square feet, Canino has any sort of fruit or vegetable you can name, fresh from the dirt (and about as cheap), and many more you can't -- one time we stumbled across a whole bin of some kind of Italian squash, each about the size of a... We were as excited as anyone else about the early 2000s boomlet in farmers' markets all over Houston. Sadly, each of them disappointed us. There's no place else in the city where you can buy a farm-fresh pineapple (in bulk, if you wish)... More »
Don't let yourself be overly distracted by the incredibly good selection of produce, vinegars and bulk beans. The real bargains are way in the back, where the growers have the discount stuff fresh off the trucks. Get red peppers for a buck a pound, jalapeņos for pennies, and some really tasty tomatoes without that nasty waxy stuff you get in the grocery store. Inside, among myriad other items, you'll find excellent eggs. Any chef will tell you that the henfruit at this market contains less wa... More »
before the flies throw up on everything. apparently they have local eggs too..... and btw its right across the street from Golden Seafood....yummy! Go get ceviche, NOW
Lots of veggies, and you don't have to buy too much like in the places behind Canino's. Good for those who aren't cooking for lot's of people. Prices are good compared to the normal prices at the grocery. No organic produce...
