Description

So named because it's only lit with candles (way to save on the electric bills, guys), this bar serves as a local cruising joint for Upper West Siders. After all, everyone's cuter in near-total darkness.

    Candle Bar, the only gay bar on the upper west side, is a perfect neighborhood spot. The atmosphere is casual, welcoming, no pretensions to being other than an old-fashioned saloon. The crowd runs to all ages, and there is a healthy mix of blacks and Latinos. A terrific juke, with lots of oldies. The pool table, always busy, is a great way to meet a special guy. Late afternoon, early evening, Candle Bar is mostly men stopping off after work for a couple of pops. Later in the night, crowd can skew younger, hipper, but without pretensions. Very relaxing spot!
